Summer in Hastings 1964 with the Mods and Rockers

We thought we'd share this fabulous video again this summer as it's an interesting trip down memory lane from the 1960s titled "Hastings Rocks Mods" talking about how around 5000 Mods and Rockers planned to invade the town and create a second 'Battle of Hastings'.

It's a fascinating snapshot of one 1964 summer Bank Holiday weekend in Hastings, mirroring the same story of several south coast seaside resorts in the '60s.

Apparently, Sussex Police had organised to fly in a plane full of London 'Bobbies' from RAF Northolt to keep the Mods and Rockers apart.

The video describes how there were around 70 arrests as the police had told large groups of Mods and Rockers to leave the town and not return, or risk being arrested.

"The Coppers kept on at us all the time" said one of the Rockers.

It's a great bit of British seaside nostalgia from a scorching hot summer of a bygone era in Hastings.

Enjoy!
